Got a question about our cover for your kitten? Or want to know more about kittens in general? We’ve answered a few questions for you here!

  • Kitten insurance

  • What is kitten insurance?

If your kitten falls ill or suffers an injury, you’ll need to visit the vet. Vet bills can be expensive, so kitten insurance is there to help cover the costs. Some kitten insurance providers will cover you if your kitten passes away, gets lost or stolen, or if it causes damage to another person’s property.

  • Do I need kitten insurance?

It isn’t mandatory to buy kitten insurance. However, a lot of people think it’s worth considering. That’s because the average vet bill can be as much as £793, but that’s just for a one-off treatment. Imagine if your kitten were to develop a long-term health condition later in life. With kitten insurance or cat insurance in place, you can be reassured that you’ve got a financial safety net in place.

  • Do I need kitten insurance if my kitten spends most of its time indoors?

Even if your kitten spends its time indoors, it’s worth thinking about kitten insurance. Here’s why.

A kitten that lives indoors is likely to get less exercise than a kitten that’s allowed outdoors. If you think about it, the natural behaviour of a cat is to spend it’s time exploring and climbing. A cat that spends most of its time indoors doesn’t have as much freedom to do these things.

A lack of exercise can have a knock-on effect on your kitten’s health, too, especially if it starts to gain too much weight. An overweight cat is at greater risk of developing certain health conditions, including obesity, feline urinary problems, and exposure to household toxins.

  • Does my kitten even need to be insured?

There are several reasons why it's worth considering kitten insurance:

Kittens have weaker immune systems - Just like a baby's, the immune system of a kitten is quite weak while it develops. This means that they're naturally more at risk of catching illnesses such as feline herpes until they get a bit older.

Curious kittens get up to mischief - Kittens often get themselves into danger as they explore their new home. It's not unusual for your kitten to start chewing electrical cables or eating houseplants that are poisonous to them. They're quite agile too, meaning it's easy for them to climb onto high surfaces they then struggle to climb down from.

Car accidents - You've probably seen older cats lounging in the shade of a parked car. But while older cats know to jump to safety when the engine roars into life, naïve kittens often don't – with nasty consequences.

Cheaper premiums - Pet insurance prices are based on several factors, one of which is your pet’s age. The younger the pet, the lower your premiums can be.

You shouldn't have to worry about pre-existing conditions - Most pet insurance providers won’t cover your pet if it has a pre-existing health condition. So, if you get your kitten insurance early, with petGuard, and your kitten goes on to develop a health condition, you'll be covered, longer-term, providing your pet policy is renewed without any gaps in cover.

  • What do I need to think about before buying kitten insurance?

Before you start looking for kitten insurance you should think about:

    Your kitten's age

It can be harder getting kitten insurance if your kitten is under eight weeks of age. At petGuard we cannot provide cover for pets under eight weeks of age.

    Existing conditions

petGuard will not cover your kitten if it has a pre-existing medical condition.

    How many pets you have

Do you own more than one pet? If so, it's worth including both pets on one single pet insurance policy. At petGuard, you can get our multi-pet discount if your pets are on the same policy.

  • How do I know which type of kitten insurance is right for me?

We offer two types of kitten insurance, depending on the level of cover you require.

    Accident Only

This type of kitten insurance offers a basic level of cover. It covers the cost of vet fees if your cat was to get injured in an accident. It does not cover you if your cat falls ill.

    Accident and Illness

To ensure your kitten gets the widest possible range of cover, our Accident and Illness option will also cover illnesses. Importantly, our cover is specifically designed to provide cover for ongoing and longer-term illnesses, providing your cover is renewed and remains in place.

  • How much is kitten insurance?

You might be surprised by how little kitten insurance can cost. Broadly speaking, the younger a cat is, the less you need to pay to insure it. You can also keep the cost down by choosing an accident-only policy, which covers your kitten against accidental injuries, but not illness.

Other factors can affect how much your kitten premiums are, including:

    Where you live

Vet fees can vary depending on where you live. If you live in somewhere where vet fees tend to be higher, it’s likely your kitten insurance will cost more too.

    How old your kitten is

It’s unlikely you’ll be able to insure your kitten if it’s less than eight weeks old. Kitten insurance then tends to get more expensive as your pet gets older.

    What breed your kitten is

If your kitten comes from a pedigree breed, you’ll usually have to pay more to insure it. It’s also worth remembering that certain cat breeds are more prone to specific illnesses. Again, this is likely to make your kitten insurance premiums more expensive.

  • When should I get kitten insurance?

You never know when your kitten is going to have an accident or fall ill. So, it’s sensible to get your pet insured as soon as you can. If you leave it until after they fall ill, you won’t be able to cover your pet for that condition.

Note: petGuard won’t pay out any claims for pets under eight weeks of age

  • Can I get insurance for more than one kitten

Have you recently introduced more than one kitten into your home? We know that the last thing you want when you're looking after lots of kittens is any more worry. That's why with our multi-pet insurance, you can include up to five kittens on one policy to save you hassle and money!

We do not insure cats that are used for breeding purposes and pre-existing illnesses and conditions are not covered.

  • What is multi-pet insurance?

With a multi-pet policy, you can include all your cats and dogs on the same policy and get a discount!

  • How does multiple cat and dog insurance work?

If you’ve got dogs and cats at home, then why not look at multi-pet insurance?

Instead of having each of your dogs and cats on different pet policies, with our multi-pet insurance you can save any hassle and take advantage of our multi-pet discount. You can cover up to five pets on one policy. We are unable to insure dogs and cats that are used for breeding purposes and pre-existing illnesses and conditions are not covered.

  • When can kitten insurance start?

You can get insurance for your kitten as soon as possible. With our pet insurance, you can get cover for kittens from eight weeks of age.

We cannot cover claims arising from the first 14 days of your Accident and Illness cover starting and within 48 hours of your Accident Only cover starting. Pre-existing illnesses are not covered.

  • What is the best food to feed a kitten?

Many kittens begin to eat solid food from around three weeks of age. While the food is solid, it still needs to be easy for your kitten to digest. You can soak dry food in water or kitten milk to make it easier for your kitten to eat.

As your kitten reaches eight weeks of age, they should be eating five meals a day to help them grow. Cats and kittens are classed as obligate carnivores, meaning they need certain nutrients that are only found in meat.

Specially formulated food for kittens; either tinned food, dry food or cooked meat should be the best option for your kitten.

  • When can kittens go outside?

Some kittens will want to go outside and explore from an early age. Before you allow your kitten to go outside, it's worth making sure that they're fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered and are settled into your home.

You may also want to make sure that your kitten is:

    • Microchipped
    • Wearing an ID tag or collar to make them recognisable

If your kitten has gone missing for more than 24 hours while they're exploring outside, then we can provide up to £1,500 in local advertising costs to help get your them home safely. We can even include a £250 reward for the safe return of your kitten.
